AFI’s Goal Update – Goodfellas

I liked this movie. It was a good movie. I really liked Robert De Niro’s character. I didn’t like Joe Pesci’s character because he was crazy hostile for no reason. Napoleon complex or anger issues? Who knows. I like how the story was told and I didn’t mind Ray Liotta’s character until he got stupid. He made all these dumb mistakes and just ruined his ideal life. There were times I wanted to slap Karen. Her attitude was a bit obnoxious. Oh, and they had a moment where she had a self narration and then they stopped. What’s up with that? I thought it would’ve been nice to hear her thoughts on certain situations especially with her lively attitude. I will give this one 4.5 stars.

AFI’s Goal Update – Duck Soup

The Marx Brothers. Good for one liners and physical comedy. Duck Soup reminds me of a cartoon. In fact, I remember Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck dressing up as them a few times. This is a 2 star movie for me because I could have done without the random singing. Plus, the ending seemed rushed and was a bit confusing. They were just outside! How did they get inside all of a sudden?! And someone explain the title to me!

AFI’s Goal Update – Vertigo

Well, this isn’t my favorite Hitchcock creation. Though, it was entertaining. I felt sorry for the main guy. Agoraphobia is not a fear I want to have. I just didn’t care for what led up to the ending and how it ended. He lost it for obvious reasons and the ending was a bit, silly. I hardly ever talk at the screen but I found myself saying, “really?!” aloud to the tv. I give this movie 3 stars.

AFI’s Goal Update – Sunset BLVD

This is my second film noir movie. And I must say it was more interesting to me than Double Indemnity. The main female character was far more interesting because she was a bit mentally unstable. One of my favorite parts was her impersonation of Charlie Chaplin. I felt kinda bad for the main guy at some point. It seemed like he kind of settled in his prison, accepted his unhappy fate. I’m sure most of us have been in those kind of relationships before. There was no fast talking or the use of the word “dame” in this movie which was a plus. However, it stuck to the classic “show you the end and then recap with narration” formula. Netflix thought I’d give it 5 stars. They overshot it by one star, I’m giving it 4.

AFI’s Goal Update – Double Indemnity

Well, I just watched my first and probably only film noir movie. It was interesting and fit the stereotype that I had in my mind. The fast talking, the word play, the narrating, the use of the word “dame”, femme fatale, dark and shadowy, and of course the detective type character that moves the plot along with his questions. Oh, and the murder. Can’t forget the murder. I got a bit bored in the middle and wondered how long the movie was but it wasn’t boring enough for me to quit watching. I’ll give it 3 stars.

Fresh Mango Smoothie

Yummy!

Since many of us are trying to eat a little healthier after the holidays, I thought I’d share this recipe for a Fresh Mango Smoothie I made the other day. Mangos happened to be half price the last time I went to the grocery store, so I thought they would be great for a smoothie! I usually use plain or vanilla Greek yogurt in my smoothies and I like sweetening them with honey. I added a little ground flaxseed in this for extra fiber, too. This smoothie is so thick and creamy! It’s perfect when you want something that tastes dessert-like but is really good for you!

FRESH MANGO SMOOTHIE by NancyC

Makes 1 (12-ounce) serving

  • 1 cup chopped ripe mango

  • 1/4 cup skim or low-fat milk
  • 1 Tablespoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon ground flaxseed or wheat germ
